B. F. Westcott's classic commentary on the Greek version of The Epistles of St John. Contains extensive verse-by-verse exegetical commentary, as well as multiple “dissertations” on various subjects relating to the epistles. Dr. Westcott was Regius Professor of Divinity at Cambridge University, Bishop of Durham, and co-editor of the Westcott-Hort critical edition of the Greek New Testament.

The first view has been held in several different forms. The Latin fragments of the Hypotyposes of Clement of Alexandria represent the letter as written ‘to a certain Babylonian (comp. 1 Pet. 5:13) Electa by name’ (ad quandam Babyloniam Electam nomine); ‘it signifies however’ (that is, this proper name, Electa), Clement adds, ‘the election of the holy Church.’ Others again (so the [late] Syrian version) have regarded Κυρία as a proper name (‘to the elect Kyria’).
